How to change the reMarkable 2 sleep screen

There’s no official setting. The sleep image is the system file /usr/share/remarkable/suspended.png; you can replace it over SSH with your own 1404 × 1872 grayscale PNG. It’s unofficial, at your own risk, and software updates may restore the original.

Before you start

  • This changes a system file. A mistake can leave the tablet showing a blank or broken sleep screen. Only do it if you’re comfortable with a terminal, and always keep a backup of the original.
  • reMarkable shows the SSH password on the device itself, in the Help / Copyrights and licenses section of the settings on reMarkable 2 software. Its exact location depends on your software version.
  • SSH over USB is the most reliable connection. Recent software versions are reported to disable SSH over Wi-Fi.

Steps

    Download a wallpaper with the reMarkable 2 preset (1404 × 1872, grayscale PNG) and rename it to suspended.png.

    Connect the tablet with USB and SSH in as root using the address and password shown in its settings (over USB this is usually 10.11.99.1).

    Back up the original: cp /usr/share/remarkable/suspended.png /home/root/suspended.png.bak.

    From your computer, copy the new file: scp suspended.png root@10.11.99.1:/usr/share/remarkable/suspended.png.

    Restart the tablet, then put it to sleep to check.

After a software update, check the sleep screen again; updates can overwrite suspended.png. Keep your image on your computer so you can copy it back.

Updating it every day

The stock sleep screen doesn’t update itself. If you already run a community build of KOReader on your reMarkable, the InkMorning plugin can set KOReader’s own sleep screen and refresh it daily when the tablet sleeps from within KOReader.
