How to set a custom sleep screen in KOReader
Updated September 23, 2026
Short answer
Before you start
KOReader draws its own sleep screen on devices where it controls sleep: Kindle, Kobo and reMarkable. On Android (including BOOX) and on PocketBook, the system draws the sleep screen instead and KOReader’s sleep screen menu isn’t available; use the device’s own settings there.
Install KOReader using the instructions for your device on KOReader's official site. Then get an image that matches your screen exactly: pick your device in the InkMorning downloader, or look up its resolution in our device guides.
Method 1: the InkMorning plugin (automatic, updates daily)
- 1Copy the
inkmorning.kopluginfolder into KOReader’spluginsfolder and restart KOReader. The plugin page shows where that folder is on each device. - 2Connect to Wi-Fi, open Tools → InkMorning → Pair device and note the 6-character code.
- 3Sign in on this website, go to My devices and enter the code.
- 4Choose today’s daily wallpaper, a live template such as a calendar, or anything in your library, and turn on the daily auto-update.
The plugin renders every image at your device's exact resolution and never turns Wi-Fi on by itself.
Method 2: set an image by hand
- 1Download an image at your device’s resolution and copy it to the device over USB, for example into a
wallpapersfolder next to your books. - 2In KOReader, tap the top of the screen to open the menu, then the gear icon, and go to Screen → Sleep screen → Wallpaper.
- 3Select Show custom image or cover on sleep screen.
- 4Open Custom images → Choose image or document cover and pick your file.
- 5Put the device to sleep to check the result.
Menu names come from current KOReader releases and can differ slightly in older or newer versions.
Rotate through a folder of images
Choose Show random image from folder on sleep screen instead, then set the folder with Custom images → Choose random image folder. Recent versions also offer Cycle through images in order.
Fixing fit, borders and messages
- If the image is letterboxed or stretched, check its size first, then use Wallpaper → Border fill, rotation, and fit to choose the fill color or stretching.
- To hide or change the text KOReader prints on the sleep screen, look under Sleep screen → Sleep screen message.
- If the image doesn’t show, make sure the file still exists at the chosen path; moving or renaming it breaks the setting.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the sleep screen setting in KOReader?
Open the top menu, tap the gear icon (Settings), then Screen → Sleep screen → Wallpaper. Menu names can vary slightly between versions.
Why don't I see a Sleep screen menu in KOReader?
On Android devices (including BOOX) and on PocketBook, the system draws the sleep screen, so KOReader doesn't show that menu. Use the device's own wallpaper or screensaver settings there.
What image format works best?
A grayscale PNG at your screen's exact resolution. KOReader also reads JPG and other common formats.
Can the sleep screen change automatically every day?
Yes. KOReader can pick a random image from a folder each time, and the InkMorning plugin can download a new daily wallpaper or re-render a live calendar every day.
Device software changes often. These are general guides, not official instructions from device makers, and menu names can vary by version. Modifying a device may affect its warranty.
