Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW sleep screen size and custom wallpapers

Updated September 23, 2026

Short answer

A Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW sleep screen image should be 1072 × 1448 pixels (portrait). Recent Kobo firmware can show your own images from a hidden screensaver folder, or you can use KOReader with the InkMorning plugin for a sleep screen that updates daily.

Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW screen size

The Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW screen is 1072 × 1448 pixels in portrait orientation (width × height). A sleep screen image at exactly that size is shown pixel for pixel, with no stretching, blurry scaling or black bars. Kobo Clara HD, Clara 2E and Clara BW all use this resolution.

Tips for e-ink: use grayscale PNG, keep strong contrast, and avoid fine gradients, which can show visible banding on 16-level gray screens. Every InkMorning download is already rendered this way for the kobo-clara preset.

Option 1: Kobo's built-in screensaver folder

On recent Kobo firmware you can show your own images while the device sleeps, without installing anything. Several independent guides describe the same method; menu labels vary a little between firmware versions.

  1. 1
Download a wallpaper with the Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW preset selected (1072 × 1448, PNG or JPG).
  2. 2
Connect the Kobo to your computer with a USB cable and tap Connect on the device.
  3. 3
Open the Kobo drive and show hidden files. Open the .kobo folder (with a leading dot) and create a folder named screensaver inside it, all lowercase.
  4. 4
Copy your image into .kobo/screensaver. With several images, Kobo picks one at random each time.
  5. 5
Eject the Kobo safely and disconnect it.
  6. 6
On the Kobo, open Settings → Energy saving and privacy and make sure the sleep screen is set to show a full-screen image. Guides report the option as “Show book covers full screen”, even though your own image is what appears.

Option 2: KOReader + the InkMorning plugin (updates daily)

KOReader is a free, open-source reading app. When the Kobo Clara HD/2E/BW sleeps while KOReader is running, KOReader draws its own sleep screen, which can be any image you choose. The InkMorning plugin sets that image for you and keeps it fresh each day, at your screen’s exact size.

  1. 1
Install KOReader by following the instructions for your device on KOReader's official site.
  2. 2
Install the InkMorning plugin and pair it with your account using the 6-character code (see the plugin page).
  3. 3
In KOReader, open Tools → InkMorning and choose today’s daily wallpaper or one from your library. Turn on the daily auto-update if you like.

Prefer to do it by hand? Download an image and point KOReader at it — see how to set a custom sleep screen in KOReader.
